MOSCOW, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Prosecutors in Russia's Altai region said they were trying to determine what caused an outbreak of typhoid fever at a children's holiday center.
At least 23 children at the center became sick, ITAR-Tass reported. A source in the territorial prosecutor's office said Tuesday the children, ages 7 to 15, developed symptoms including nausea and vomiting.
The center's kitchen was being inspected and water samples taken. Typhoid is usually acquired from food or water contaminated with the feces of an infected person.
In Kurgan, in western Siberia, 30 children at a health center were reported ill with food poisoning, the news agency said. A spokesman for the Prosecutor General's Office said the children were taken to the infectious diseases hospital Dec. 10.
"The inspection of the children's establishment revealed that the accident had occurred because of gross violations of sanitary rules, including those related to food processing and storing technologies," the spokesman said.
