Floods move into southeast Queensland

BRISBANE, Australia, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Australia's disastrous floods shifted to southeastern Queensland, including Brisbane, Sunday, with more heavy rain forecast for Monday.

Emergency services are warning residents to prepare for extreme weather, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Maryborough, the Sunshine Coast and nearby areas were already flooding Sunday, while the towns of Pine Creek and Gympie were cut off.

Power was cut as a precaution in Gympie, where the Mary River is expected to reach around 56 feet Monday morning and cut the town in half.

Acting Mayor Tony Perrett said emergency services were well prepared.

Fox Rogers of the Sunshine Coast Disaster Management Group said roads were closed from Beerburrum to Eumundi and in the interior.

Warren Brisden, regional director of Emergency Management Queensland, said it would not take much more rain to tip the balance.

"This year with all of the catchments primed and the river's already flooding, that 200 millimetres [8 inches] of rain ... could mean the difference between a minor flood and a major flood," he said.
