Scottish snow delays planes, Cup matches

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Snow and ice in Scotland fouled schedules for airlines and soccer matches Saturday, officials said.

Edinburgh Airport was closed in the early morning after about 4 inches of snow fell on the city, STV Today reported. At least 20 departing flights were canceled and 16 did not arrive.

After the airport reopened, travelers were advised to check with airlines before heading there.

At least five Scottish Cup matches were delayed, Sky News reported.

Heart of Midlothian postponed a fourth-round match with St. Johnstone that was scheduled for Sunday because of burst pipes at Tynecastle Stadium in Edinburgh.

"The pitch at Tynecastle is in perfect condition however public safety is our priority and we were left with no option other than to postpone the game," a Hearts' spokesman said.

Also in Edinburgh, hundreds of hardy runners participated in the Bupa Great Winter Run. Mo Farah, 27, of London led the pack to win, dressed in a layered outfit that kept his hands and arms completely covered, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Organizers rerouted the course to keep runners off the windy heights of Arthur's Seat, STV said.
