Interpol won't issue warrants for Bakiyevs

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- The international police agency Interpol rejected a request for arrest warrants for Kyrgyz President Kurman Bakiyev and other family members, prosecutors said.

A Kyrgyz news agency said the country's prosecutor general made the request, RIA Novosti reported. The prosecutor general asked Interpol to issue a red notice after its first attempt was rejected in August. Interpol said the Bakiyev family was being targeted for political reasons.

Bakiyev, elected president in 2005 after the Tulip Revolution, fled the country following street protests last year. Roza Otunbayeva became interim president.

Interpol has issued a warrant for only one member of the family, Bakiyev's son, Mark. Bakiyev and members of his family are being tried in absentia in Kyrgyzstan.
