Iran claims it has been downing spy drones

TEHRAN, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Iran said Sunday it recently shot down two unmanned aerial drones it claims were in its air space over the Persian Gulf.

The claim made by the head of the Revolutionary Guard air corps did not include any physical evidence but marked the first time Iranian officials had publicly announced the alleged shoot-downs.

Amir Ali Hajizadeh told the Fars news agency in a report monitored by the BBC that there had been several other drones knocked out of the sky in the past.

The BBC said Hajizadeh added that most drone activity in the region was over Iraq and Afghanistan, however there have been "some violations against our soil."
