Santiago newspaper La Nacion said the Seismological Service of the University of Chile measured the quake at 6.5 magnitude on the Richter scale, not 7.1.

LiveScience.com reported there were no initial reports of serious damage or casualties.

La Nacion also reported Vicente Nunez, director of the National Emergency Office, said his agency determined there would be no tsunami along Chile's coast.

LiveScience said the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center also had ruled out the possibility of a tsunami along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia or Alaska coastlines.

"No tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas," the center said.
