Bomb explodes in front of Greek courthouse

ATHENS, Greece, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- No one was injured in a bomb explosion outside a court building near central Athens Thursday, police said.

Officials said they found the device and blocked off the area around the Athens administrative court building after calls to local media warned a bomb would be detonated, The New York Times reported.

"(The) caller said the device had been strapped to a scooter outside the courthouse and gave the scooter's registration number," an Athens police officer said.

Bomb disposal experts were collecting and examining the device and the motorbike, the Times reported.

The explosion damaged the court building's facade and several vehicles, and blew out windows in nearby apartment buildings.

Justice Minister Haris Kastanidis said authorities "will not be intimidated by terrorist attacks."

Police officials said it was too soon to determine the bomb's composition or which insurgent organization may have been behind the blast, the Times said.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for Thursday's explosion, which came a few weeks after a parcel bombs were sent to several foreign embassies in Athens, injuring one and causing international concern after one bomb reached the Berlin office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
