16 die when boat capsizes in India

RAMESWARAM, India, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- A boat carrying people on a picnic capsized in the Gulf of Mannar off the southeastern Indian coast Sunday, killing 16 people, police said.

The victims included 10 women. Five of those who drowned were from Australia, the Press Trust of India reported.

Police official Perumal Ramanujam told PTI most of the victims were from the fishing colony of Periyapattinam village.

Another police official said it wasn't clear how many people were in the boat, which was rated for only seven passengers.
