Powerful storm lashes New Brunswick

BOUCTOUCHE, New Brunswick, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Environment Canada says a new round of coastal flooding is possible at high tide on New Brunswick's eastern seaboard.

The region has already been pounded with strong winds and heavy storm surges, damaging New Brunswick's most famous beach and a popular sand-dune preservation area, the CBC reported.

People on the province's eastern seaboard said they haven't seen such a powerful surf in decades.

"This is the worst of the worst," Bouctouche resident Jeannelle LeBlanc said.

She witnessed the damage the storm did to the Bouctouche dune, which attracts more than 100,000 visitors each year. The strong surf severely damaged more than a mile of boardwalk and about seven miles of the dunes.

"I know all the work that the Irvings (J.D. Irving Ltd.) and the community have done on this project and to see this storm take a big toll like it did today, it's unbelievable," LeBlanc said.

Near Shediac, about 20 miles to the south, the province's best-known beach, Parlee Beach, saw large sections of sand washed away. It's marina sustained heavy damage as did a trailer park.

Shediac Mayor Raymond Cormier said damage was extensive, but could have been worse.

"There was damage as you can see here at the marina and it's quite extensive, six figures for sure, but it could have been worse," Cormier said. "There's no loss of lives. That's important."
