Philippine hotel fire claims 15 lives

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- An early-morning fire Sunday gutted a five-story hotel in the Philippines, killing at least 15 people, authorities said.

Most of the victims were nursing graduates who were in Tuguegarao to take a licensing exam, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported. The victims also included a couple and their child related to the hotel's owner, Neil Caranguian, a senior city fire inspector, told the newspaper.

It wasn't clear how many people were in the hotel, though an official with the University of La Salette in Santiago City said at least 27 nursing graduates from that school got out unharmed and six were taken to hospitals.

Investigators suspected faulty wiring may have caused the fire, which broke out about 1 a.m., the newspaper said.
