South Korea says drills will be held

YEONPYEONG ISLAND, South Korea, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- South Korea's live-fire military drills, postponed Saturday by the weather, will be conducted within three days, an official said.

The country's Joint Chiefs of Staff said threats from North Korea will not deter it from going through with its plans, Voice of America reported. The drills are to be held on Yeonpyeong Island, which the North shelled on Nov. 23, killing four people.

The North Korean military promised a new attack of "greater intensity and range" if the drills are held, the country's official Korean Central News Agency said.

The U.N. Security Council scheduled an emergency closed-door meeting Sunday morning, Yonhap News Agency reported. Russia requested the meeting, with Ambassador Vitaly Churkin saying the United Nations must send a "a restraining signal" to Pyongyang.

Yeonpyeong residents said they're worried the North will launch a new attack over the scheduled military drills.

"The situation makes me too nervous to stay, since North Korea may fire artillery at any time in the near future," Kang Yeong-gil, a 67-year-old farmer, told Yonhap. "As soon as this rice crop gets sold in the government procurement, I will leave."
