ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- A coalition of religious parties has announced a series of protests to protect Pakistan's blasphemy law from changes.

The group announced the campaign after a conference Wednesday, the Dawn newspaper reported. Plans include demonstrations across the country on Dec. 24, a shopkeepers' strike on Dec. 31 and a meeting in Karachi on Jan. 9.

A member of Parliament, Sherry Rehman, introduced amendments last month, arguing the law is being abused. Last month, a Roman Catholic woman, Asia Bibi, was sentenced to hang for blaspheming the prophet Mohammed.

Political and religious leaders at Wednesday's meeting said the law is not used only against members of religious minorities.
