Iran suicide bombing at mosque kills 41

TEHRAN, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- Suicide bombers killed at least 41 people in Chabahar, Iran, when they attacked a mosque where people marked the eve of a Shiite holy day, officials said.

Reports indicate the militant group Jundullah claimed responsibility for the blast Wednesday that also injured at least 50 people, Voice of America reported.

Worshipers were gathering at the mosque in Chabahar, a mainly Sunni city, on the eve of Ashura, which marks the death of Shiite martyr Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Mohammad.

Officials said they arrested one person described as the leader of the attack.

Jundullah, which the United States has designated a terrorist organization, has carried out several high-profile attacks previously, including violence at mosques and gatherings of Iran's Republican Guard, VOA said. Iranian leaders had said they hoped the group had weakened after its leader, Abdolmalek Rigi, was executed in June.

World leaders had condemned the attack.

Ali Bateni, the governor of Chabahar, told Iran's official Islamic Republic News Agency one of the attackers was killed in the explosion and another attacker was arrested.
