Iranian woman charged in husband's death

TEHRAN, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- An Iranian woman who was sentenced to death by stoning for committing adultery has also been charged in her husband's death, Iran's state-run Press TV said.

Press TV said it took Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, whose stoning sentence was suspended, to her home to recount the alleged killing of her husband and that it would broadcast the visit Friday, Voice of America reported.

Ashtiani captured news headlines after she was sentenced to death by stoning for committing adultery. She could also be sentenced to death if found guilty of killing her husband, the BBC reported.

Following strong international pressure, Iran suspended the stoning sentence but her whereabouts remained a mystery, news reports said.

The release of photographs of her and her son at home in Iran led some sources to say she had been released from custody. But Iranian officials said she was still in prison.

"Contrary to a vast publicity campaign by western media that confessed murderer Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani has been released," she remains in custody, Iranian officials said.
