Husband in honeymoon killing gets bail

LONDON, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- A judge refused South Africa's request Friday to keep a wealthy British businessman behind bars on charges he arranged the killing of his wife in Cape Town.

Shrien Dewani, 30, whose family owns a chain of nursing homes, was arrested earlier this week. The High Court set bail at 250,000 pounds, The Guardian reported.

Anni Dewani, 28, was shot dead while she and her husband were on a honeymoon in Cape Town after a wedding in India. Her husband told investigators they asked their driver for a detour through a black township to give them a glimpse of the "real Africa" and were set upon by carjackers who pushed him from the vehicle.

South African representatives told Justice Duncan Ouseley they have strong evidence Dewani paid the driver to kill his wife. This includes videotape from a security camera at the Cape Grace Hotel that shows Dewani handing a package to the driver three days after his wife was killed.

The driver, Zola Tongo, pleaded guilty to killing Anni Dewani and said he was paid by her husband. Tongo was sentenced to 18 years Tuesday.

Clare Montgomery, Dewani's lawyer in London, said he expects to be cleared.
