British man charged with honeymoon killing

LONDON, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- A British businessman whose wife was killed during their South African honeymoon was arrested Wednesday in London, authorities said.

South African investigators say Shrien Dewani arranged to have his wife shot dead in a faked carjacking in Capetown, the Daily Mirror reported. He appeared in court and was ordered to remain jailed after South African authorities objected to bail.

Another hearing was scheduled Thursday to consider bail.

Dewani, 30, told police in Capetown last month his wife, Anni, 28, wanted to see the "real Africa" so they asked the driver taking them back to their hotel to detour through a black township. He said several men seized the car, pushed him out and took off with his wife, whose body was found a few hours later.

The driver, Zola Tongo, pleaded guilty Tuesday and said Dewani hired him to kill his wife. Tongo was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Anni Dewani's family was in court for the hearing.

"All I want to say is that we want justice for Anni," a cousin, Sneha Hindocha, said.

The couple traveled to South Africa after a wedding in India.
