Sharks attack swimmers at Red Sea resort

SHARM EL-SHEIK, Egypt, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- At least two sharks appear to have been involved in recent attacks on swimmers at an Egyptian resort on the Red Sea, scientists say.

A German woman was killed and at least four others injured at Sharm el-Sheik, The Daily Telegraph reported. The attacks have taken place in one short stretch of beach.

A shortfin mako shark taken last week has been matched to bite marks on one of the victims, experts say. Witnesses identified the shark in a later attack as a whitetip.

Mohamed Abdel Fadil Shousha, a regional governor, suggested the sharks could have been planted off Sharm el-Sheik by Israel's spy agency, the Mossad, the news Web site Bikyamasr said. In an interview with The Sun he said there was no confirmation yet of Israeli involvement and did not explain why the Mossad would threaten swimmers at a resort, which is popular among Israeli tourists.

Experts say the culprits behind the attacks may be Egyptian tour operators who throw chum overboard to attract sharks so their passengers can get a look at them.
