PRETORIA, South Africa, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- The millionaire husband of a British woman killed on her South African honeymoon has been implicated in her death, a plea bargain statement indicates.
The statement was made by the chauffeur of the vehicle Anni Dewani and her husband Shrien were riding in when they took a detour through one of Cape Town's poorest areas, South Africa's official government source BuaNews reported Tuesday.
Shrien Dewani, 30, told police their vehicle had been hijacked when his wife Anni, 28, was found shot to death in the backseat of the car Nov. 13.
The driver, Zola Tongo, has said in his plea bargain statement that Anni's death was planned by her husband.
He said the couple were never hijacked or forced out of the vehicle and that the hijacking claim was just a coverup for a homicide.
He said Dewani offered him $2,000 to kill his wife.
Under the plea bargain, Tongo has been sentenced to 18 years in a South African prison.
Shrien Dewani was allowed to return to England four days after his wife's death.
