Storm closes Canadian bridge, schools

FREDERICTON, New Brunswick, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Storms in Canada's maritime provinces have closed the Confederation Bridge linking Prince Edward Island with mainland New Brunswick, officials said.

High winds, snow and rain knocked out power and forced schools and ferry services to close, and the bridge link was closed to all traffic Monday morning with winds gusting to 90 mph, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Bridge officials said the span would probably not open again before midnight.

A storm surge warning was issued for Prince Edward Island and the eastern shore of Nova Scotia by Environment Canada.

Meteorologist Doug Mercer urged people near the water to use caution because the tides will be higher than normal.

Tides would be peaking Monday for most of the region, with "60 or 70 centimeters [20 to 23 inches] of surge on top of the tides," he said.

"The water levels are going to be high and we're really most worried about the waves on top of the surge."
