Abbas garners Erdogan's support

ANKARA, Turkey, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told the Palestinian president he will support the establishment of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders.

Erdogan met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ankara, Turkey, Sunday to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Ma'an news agency said Monday.

Nabil Ma'roof the Palestinian ambassador to Turkey, later told the official Palestinian news agency WAFA that Erdogan told Abbas he would urge all countries with whom Turkey has diplomatic ties to support such a move, the agency said.

Erdogan also pledged to contribute $10 million for the construction of an industrial zone in the West Bank city of Jenin as part of his country's assistance to strengthen economic ties with the Palestinians, the agency said.

Prior to his arrival in Turkey, Abbas met with Jordan's King Abdullah in Amman, Jordan, to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

On Tuesday Abbas is scheduled to meet with Greece's leaders in Athens.
