Small nations seek voice at climate talks

CANCUN, Mexico, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- The representative of island nations on the front lines of global warming says he won't sit by idly at the climate change summit convening in Mexico this week.

Ronny Jumeau, leader of the Seychelles delegation and the Alliance of Small Island States, told the Los Angeles Times that the people he represents are the ones that will be driven from their homes as global sea levels rise.

"I won't shut up," Jumeau told the newspaper. "Even when we're underwater, when the bubbles pop, you'll hear us yelling."

Jumeau may not hear much of what he wants to hear. The Times said the Cancun conference that opened Sunday would not result in any broad agreements, but rather some side deals on issues such as deforestation and the verification of industrial emission cuts.

Jumeau said that despite the standoff over potentially drastic cuts in fossil-fuel consumption among major industrial nations, he will keep pressing the case for his smaller constituencies. "I'll talk to anyone," he said. "I don't care who they are as long as the word gets out."
