U.K. promotes 'gay-friendly' measures

LONDON, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- The United Kingdom's coalition government says it is proposing measures aimed at promoting equality for gays, including making workplaces "gay-friendly."

The government's Equality Strategy, in laying out a number of proposals, said many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people still faced discrimination and even violence, The Daily

"Attitudes are changing," the strategy said. "But the sad reality remains that too many people are victims of discrimination and hate crimes in the U.K. today."

Among the steps to be taken, the strategy said, the government would publish studies on why employers struggle to make workplaces "gay, bisexual and transgender friendly."

"We will work with business to consider the report's recommendations and take steps to improve LGB&T equality in the workplace," the government strategy paper said.

The government said it would support recruiting more openly gay candidates to become members of Parliament, promote the rights of same-sex couples abroad, and work with the governing bodies of sports to address homophobic prejudice in football and other sports.

"Challenging and changing attitudes among young people is key to ensuring we continue to become a more tolerant society," the strategy said.
