JAKARTA, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Officials in Indonesia said Tuesday the intensity of a volcanic eruption in East Java has begun to show signs of declining.
The head of the country's Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency told Indonesia's Antara news agency the eruption of Mount Bromo is subsiding. "What is happening is mere light smoke dominated by water vapor and dust," said agency chief Gede Suantika.
Gede said the drop in intensity was accompanied by a decrease in seismic tremors.
The number of volcanic earthquakes dropped from 28 on Monday to six on Tuesday, he said.
Each quake lasted between 10 to 28 seconds.
Gede said it was possible the intensity of Mount Bromo's eruption could increase again so the volcano's danger status will remain at the highest level.
Due to the eruption, the Abdulrahman Saleh airport in Malang remains closed until Saturday, Antara said.
