Palestinian workers shot by Israeli troops

GAZA, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Five Palestinian workers were shot by Israeli soldiers after they entered a restricted area in the Gaza Strip, the army said.

The Palestinians were collecting stone fragments north of Beit Lahiya in Gaza when they were shot, the Ma'an news agency said. They were evacuated by donkey cart and then taken by Red Crescent ambulances to Kamal Udwan Hospital in Jabaliya, the agency said.

There was no immediate word on the extent of the injuries.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said soldiers fired warning shots at the group, which was spotted in a restricted area approaching the Gaza border fence. When they ignored the warning shots, soldiers opened fire, aiming for the lower body, she said.

The agency said including Tuesday's incident, 12 Palestinians have been shot by soldiers since the beginning of the week.
