Ivory Coast results due; violence reported

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Partial results were due Monday in a runoff election between Ivory Coast President Lauren Gbagbo and former Premier Alassane Ouattara, officials said.

Violence marred the election. Authorities reported at least two people were killed and three others critically injured, CNN reported.

Gbagbo finished ahead of Ouattara in a preliminary election last month, capturing 38 percent of the vote. Ouattara picked up 32 percent.

Each candidate blames the other for problems with the election although both candidates and international observers said it was fair.

Ouattara supporters criticized a curfew ordered by Gbagbo. The curfew continues nightly until Thursday.

"With all the disturbances that we observe, it's more than necessary to affirm that the curfew is maintained and is in effect," Gbagbo said after voting Sunday.

Gbagbo's supporters allege that rebels in the northern part of the country were holding government officials hostage during the election. Ouattara's party accused the president's supporters of barring voters they disagreed with from voting in the nation's capital of Abidjan.
