JERUSALEM, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- The Tel Aviv U.S. Embassy told Israeli leaders the WikiLeaks Web site would release possibly classified cables on Israeli-American relations, Haaretz reported.
The embassy told the Foreign Ministry and the prime minister's bureau the whistle-blowing site planned to release hundreds of thousands of American diplomatic cables, some of which dealt with Israeli-American ties, Haaretz said Friday.
Some of the cables could contain confidential reports, a senior government official told Haaretz.
The official told the newspaper the material includes diplomatic cables sent to Washington from American embassies all over the world during the past five years, Haaretz said.
"The Americans said they view the leak very seriously. They don't know when they will be released on the Internet and what exactly they say, but they didn't want us to read about it in the newspapers," the official said.
Kurt Hoyer, spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv, did not confirm or deny the newspaper report. He said the release of classified cables from any U.S. embassy could have serious implications, the newspaper said.
