New Delhi offers secure transport to women

NEW DELHI, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Police in New Delhi say women stranded in the city can call a helpline and they will be escorted to their homes.

The initiative comes after a 30-year-old call center employee was abducted and raped by five men while she was returning home from work, the Hindustan Times reported.

"If any woman feels stranded, she is advised to call PCR helpline '100.' [A] PCR van will drop her at her residence," Rajan Bhagat, a representative for Delhi police, said Friday.

Police officers in parts of the city where women from northeast India live in large numbers have also been directed to meet with them and counsel them about security on regular basis, he said.

"Delhi police has also intensified patrolling and checking during night on vulnerable roads," Bhagat said.

The call center employee was raped Wednesday, six days after Deputy Commissioner of Police for Crime Ashok Chand held a meeting with call center companies to ensure better security for women, especially those who work the night shift, the Times reported.
