CAIRO, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- An Egyptian official blames Mossad, the Israeli secret intelligence agency, for recent deadly riots between Coptic Christians and Muslims.
Mostafa el Feki, the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the People's Assembly, said Thursday at a university conference that Western governments are taking advantage of the election period to destabilize Egypt, Ynetnews reported.
"It is almost certain that the Mossad is involved in these events," he said. "The state is dealing with dangerous events that could not have succeeded without external intervention with Israel at its head."
Violent clashes between Christians and Muslims were set off Wednesday when a construction permit for a new church building was revoked. At least one man was killed.
About 10 percent of the population is Christian. They complain of discrimination, including regulations that require them to seek permits for religious construction while Muslims can add buildings at will.
