Magnitude 5 earthquake rocks Afghanistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Pakistan was rocked by a 5.0 magnitude earthquake near its Afghan border Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of casualties, an official said.

The temblor, centered in the Hindu Kush mountain range in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, lasted 10 to 12 seconds when it struck at 2:27 p.m. local time (4:27 a.m. EST), Chief Meteorologist Arif Mehmood said.

It triggered panic among local people, he said.

Several cities, including the provincial capital Peshawar and the national capital Islamabad, felt the tremors, the nation's independent Geo TV network reported.

A magnitude 4.9 quake shook the same area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Nov. 15.

A devastating magnitude magnitude 7.6 quake shook Pakistan, Afghanistan and India Oct. 8, 2005, killing more than 73,000 people and leaving 3.5 million homeless, many in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
