SANA'A, Yemen, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- A suicide bombing in the al-Jawf area in northern Yemen killed at least 17 people and injured scores of others Wednesday, tribal leaders said.

The bomber apparently targeted a Houthi gathering when it intercepted a Houthi motorcade heading to an area to mark the Shiite celebration of Eid al-Ghadir, the Kuwaiti news service KUNA reported.

Among the dead was Husein Hadban, a founder of the Houthi group, officials said.

While no one has claimed responsibility for the bombing, security sources indicate an al-Qaida-affiliated organization is "very likely" behind the attack, KUNA said.
