Colombian rebel leader likely killed

BOGOTA, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Colombia's president said it was likely one of the men killed in a military security operation was the leader of the leftist guerrilla group known as FARC.

President Juan Manuel Santos told a news conference soldiers had attacked a suspected rebel camp in the jungle Saturday and four or five militants were killed, CNN reported.

The bombing and raid of the camp targeted members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as FARC, Santos said, adding there was "apparent" evidence its leader, Fabian Ramirez, was among the fatalities.

"I say apparently because it is not confirmed," Santos said. "Most likely, he's dead."

The president said numerous personal items belonging to Ramirez had been found after the attack, such as one of his handguns, his backpack and computers.

Apart from its political ideologies, FARC is suspected by the U.S. State Department of being a massive distributor of cocaine, The Latin American Herald Tribune said. Accordingly, there are outstanding trafficking and conspiracy warrants in the United States for Ramirez.
