CAPE TOWN, South Africa, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- A British honeymooner whose wife was killed by carjackers in South Africa said they had taken a detour to see the "real Africa" when they were attacked.
Shrien Dewani of Bristol said he and his wife, Anni, asked their taxi driver to detour through the township of Gugulethu in Cape Town on their way to their hotel Saturday night, The Times of South Africa reported. Anni had talked about seeing the "real Africa" after a day touring vineyards and dining at a restaurant.
One man was brought in for questioning Tuesday. Police said he was 26 and lives in Khayelitsha, another Cape Town township.
Dewani and his wife had traveled to South Africa after their marriage in India. He runs a family chain of nursing homes while Anni, born in Sweden in an Asian immigrant family, was an engineer.
Dewani told The Independent of London the first he and his wife knew their cab was being attacked "was when we heard the banging."
"I don't want to go into detail about what happened during the attack, because I will probably start crying," he said. "But they were so cold. They put a gun in my ear and pulled back the trigger."
Dewani said he begged the gunmen to leave them both by the side of the road. Instead, they pushed him out of a window and took off with his wife. Her body was found in Khayelitsha.
