U.N. stresses Afghan transition commitment

KABUL, Afghanistan, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- The U.N. envoy mission in Afghanistan Monday reaffirmed its commitment to support the Afghan-led transition to greater stability.

The Joint Coordination and Monitoring Board, jointly led by the United Nations and the Afghan government, met Monday in Kabul to work further on implementing the Afghan Compact, a five-year development blueprint begun in 2006 by Afghanistan and its international partners, the United Nations said in a release.

"The government has set forth an ambitious agenda," said Staffan de Mistura, the U.N. secretary-general's special representative and head of the U.N. Assistance Mission for Afghanistan. "We applaud the collaborative way in which ministries have worked together to identify the top priorities for their country's future. We now have a concrete road map to deliver practical results. The international community is committed to supporting this Afghan-led process."

Already in place are action plans for the government's 22 national priority programs, which help drive stability and prosperity across the country, de Mistura said. A key step along the way was the establishment of a reporting system to monitor progress and to demonstrate results to the Afghan people and the international community.

Officials said progress also has been made in establishing a framework to support delivery of governance, security and development in Afghanistan.
