Sinn Fein's Adams to run in Ireland

DUBLIN, Ireland, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams said Sunday he's quitting the Northern Irish Assembly and British Parliament to seek election to Ireland's Parliament.

The 62-year-old republican movement leader said the move to Dublin would allow him to do more to help move Ireland forward, The New York Times reported. He called the current government of Prime Minister Brian Cowen, led by Fianna Fail, a rival of Sinn Fein's, is "probably the most unpopular in the history of the state."

Adams played a major role in the 1998 Good Friday agreement that set the stage for peace between the mainly Catholic republicans, who want a united Ireland, and the mainly Protestant unionists aligned with Britain.
