TEHRAN, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- Iran is boosting its radar capabilities to reach out more than 1,850 miles, an Iranian defense official said.
In an interview with the state Fars news agency on Sunday, Brig. Gen. Ahmad Miqani, commander of the Khatam ol-Anbia air defense base, said work is under way to widen the country's radar coverage.
"If the maximum range of our radar systems was 400 km (248.5 miles) in the past, we have this good news for the people that we have started making a radar system covering an area with the radius of 3,000 km (1,864.1 miles) which can identify all objects flying around the country at low altitudes," Miqani said.
Work to improve the country's radar capabilities began several years ago, and now active and passive radar systems with different range capabilities and frequencies are being built, he said.
"In addition to the southern borders and waters, all the Persian Gulf littoral states are under the cover of the radars of the Khatam ol-Anbia air defense base," Gen. Habibollah Alizadeh, commander of the defense unit in the southeastern part of the country, told the news agency
Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi, a brigadier general, said the country's radar systems are capable of detecting every target in the air.
"Today, we own sea-based and ground-based radars as well as radars which are capable of identifying multiple air targets in various frequencies and different altitudes," he said.
