DHAKA, Bangladesh, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- Clashes broke out in Bangladesh's capital Sunday during a nationwide strike called by the opposition, authorities said.
Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse hundreds of protesters who threw stones as they marched through Dhaka and enforced a strike, the Voice of America reported. Dozens were injured.
It was the second day of violence. Activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party took to the streets Saturday after their leader, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, was evicted from the military compound where she has lived for more than 30 years.
The government said Zia left voluntarily after a court deadline to vacate the house expired. But she said security forces broke in the door and dragged her out of her home. She has appealed the order to vacate in court.
Zia was allotted the home in 1981 after her husband, former President Ziaur Rahman, was killed in a military coup. The government, led by her longtime rival, Prime Minister Sheik Hasina, asked her to leave last year, saying she was violating the conditions of its allotment by engaging in politics there.
