OTTAWA, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Toronto police officers who concealed their names during the Group of 20 protests face penalties that could include losing a day's pay, the police chief says.
Chief Bill Blair was grilled by a House of Commons committee Wednesday about security during the meeting, the Toronto Star reported. He said any officers who removed name tags while on duty were acting as individuals and will be penalized if they are identified.
"I have a rule with the Toronto Police Service -- it's my rule -- it's in accordance with the policy of my police services board that our officers will wear their names displayed on their uniforms," Blair said.
While the department received 13 complaints about missing name tags, about 90 officers appear to have violated the rule, Blair said. He told the public safety committee investigators have spent hours reviewing videotape of the protests.
Blair said the appropriate penalty will be imposed, adding he believes it is being docked pay for a day.
