TEHRAN, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Thousands gathered outside the former U.S. Embassy in Tehran and chanted slogans against Israel and the United States marking 31 years since the takeover.

IRNA, the Iranian state news agency, said students, teachers and politicians participated in the demonstration marking the Nov. 4, 1979, takeover of the embassy to protest U.S. involvement in Iran following the establishment of the Islamic Republic. Fifty-two U.S. citizens were held hostage for 444 days.

Iranians carried banners and waved flags as they chanted "Death to America," "Death to Israel" and other slogans against what they called "world arrogance," the news agency said.

The state run Press TV said Nov. 4 has been declared a national day of resistance against global arrogance.

"This event symbolizes the bravery and courage of the young revolutionary generation against the authority of America because taking over the den of espionage destabilized U.S. power ... and brought America to its knees," Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said in a speech to students Wednesday.
