Teen survives flight in landing gear

KIRENSK, Russia, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- A 14-year-old Russian boy survived an hour-long flight as a stowaway in the landing gear of an airplane, officials said.

The teen, a ward of the state in a Siberian village, escaped from an orphanage, and along with a friend, robbed a local grocery store. He then boarded the AN-24 airliner bound for the city of Kirensk, Russia's TV Novosti reported Tuesday.

TV Novosti did not report on the friend's whereabouts.

The stowaway was apprehended on arrival in Kirensk by police and taken to a hospital where he was diagnosed with hypothermia and hypoxia, TV Novosti reported.

He will be returned to the orphanage 186 miles from Kirensk, officials said.
