NAHA, Japan, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- A city council on Okinawa is asking the Japanese government to dispose of bombs left over from the 1945 World War II battle on the island.
The council of Naha, capital of Okinawa prefecture, noted unexploded bombs still threaten residents 65 years after the war, Kyodo News reported Monday.

The detonation of one bomb Oct. 17 forced the evacuation of 2,800 people, and 2,300 tons of ordnance are believed to be still buried.
The council is asking the Tokyo government to assume the full cost of magnetic surveys for unexploded bombs at construction sites and to speed up their disposal.
The Battle of Okinawa killed more than 200,000 people, including about 94,000 civilians, in the closing days of World War II.
