Pirates take tanker and trawler off Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Pirates have captured two ships off the coast of Kenya, the command of the European anti-piracy force said Sunday.

The sea pirates seized a Singapore-flagged liquid natural gas tanker, the York, and the Golden Wave fishing trawler, the European Union's Operation Atalanta force told ITAR-Tass.

The tanker, which was carrying 150,000 tons of LNG from the Kenyan port of Mombasa to the Seychelles, has a crew of 17 -- a German captain, two Ukrainians and 14 Filipinos.

The York was attacked about 50 nautical miles out of Mombasa on Saturday, a Turkish warship from the Atalanta force confirmed. The warship's helicopter flew over the tanker and also spotted the trawler.

The Interunity Management Corp. of Greece, which chartered the tanker, said the crew members are in good condition.
