Moscow to permit gay pride parades

PARIS, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- The European Court of Human Rights in France ruled Thursday that a Russian ban on gay pride marches is illegal.

The court said fears in Moscow that such marches would cause unrest were unfounded, Russia's RIA Novosti reported in Paris.

For years, former mayor Yury Luzhkov and Moscow authorities denied requests to hold gay pride parades. Luzhkov called the marches "satanic," the newspaper said.

Leading gay activist Mikolai Alekseyev instituted a claim that led to the ruling, and he is to receive $41,300 in compensation.
