14 dead in floods in S.W. Russia

KRASNODAR, Russia, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- At least 14 people have been killed in devastating floods that struck the Krasnodar region in southwest Russia, the regional governor said Wednesday.

Alexander Tkachyov said another nine people were missing and more than 6,000 displaced or injured by the floods, the RIA Novosti news agency reported. He said 20 villages were flooded when heavy rain in the mountains sent rivers over their banks during the weekend.

The regional emergencies ministry said the damage so far has cost more than $65 million. About 2,000 homes suffered major damage.

The government said compensation of about $5,000 a person will be paid to flood victims. In Rostov, which borders Krasnodar, police and journalists have begun drives to collect clothing and emergency supplies.

Officials said more flooding is possible with rain in the forecast Wednesday night.
