PATNA, India, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- At least 10 people were killed in a stampede at a Hindu temple during a religious festival in northern India, authorities said.
The tragedy occurred Saturday during the Navratri festival in a temple crowded with 45,000 worshipers in the village of Tildiha in Bihar state, Neelmani, a police official, told Asia News International in Patna.
A panic ensued when part of the sacrificed body of a goat fell on the crowd. People began running and trampling each other, NDTV reported.
"Yes, it was very much overcrowded. The people died due to the stampede," Usha Rani, one of the injured, told ANI.
"Ten deaths have been confirmed so far, while four are stated to be in critical condition," district magistrate Aadesh Chitarmare told Press Trust of India.
The injured are being treated at hospitals in Tarapur and Banka.
