SEOUL, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- The population of South Korea has passed 50 million, an official announcement by the country's Home Affairs Ministry said.

The Ministry of Public Administration and Security said the 50 million mark was surpassed with the registration last month of a newborn baby in Gyeonggi province, Yonhap news agency reported Wednesday.

As of Sept. 30, the country's official population reached 50,001,273, with 10,186,556 living in the capital of Seoul.

Gyeonggi Province is the most populous region of the country with 11,639,429 people.

In 1969, when South Korea officially began counting the population, there were 34.4 million people in the country.

It passed the 40 million mark in 1984.

By age groups, those in their 40s were in the majority with 8,734,431 counted, Yonhap reported.
