5 dead in fiery highway crash

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- A fiery head-on crash between a car and Jeep south of The Pas in northern Manitoba left five people dead, Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.

The 4:30 a.m. Friday collision on Highway 10 killed all four people inside the car and a woman riding in the Jeep, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

The Jeep's male passenger survived and was flown to a nearby Winnipeg hospital with unspecified injuries.

Police say forensic tests will be needed to determine the genders and identities of those in the car who were killed, the CBC reported.

The RCMP says road conditions were good at the time of the crash.

"My heart goes out to the families," said Herb Jacques, mayor of The Pas. "This is Thanksgiving weekend -- you couldn't ask for anything worse," he said.
