Two Nigerians sought in car bombings

LAGOS, Nigeria, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Two Nigerian men are believed to be responsible for car bombings that killed 12 people during independence celebrations in Lagos, officials said.

One suspect was arrested in connection with the bombings but his identity had not been released, Radio France Internationale reported Monday.

"We are still examining the scene for fresh evidence and are looking for two Nigerians who are believed to be the masterminds," police representative Emmanuel Ojukwu said.

The man in custody was arrested shortly after Fridays attack. He is not a Nigerian but police did not give his nationality.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta claimed responsibility for the attacks, and its former leader was arrested but denied his involvement, the report said.

MEND is an armed group based in the country's oil-rich southern region.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan said the attackers were part of "a small terrorist group" based outside Nigeria.

Authorities didn't disclose details of the charges against former MEND leader Henry Okah but said they involve "conspiracy to engage in terrorist activities."

Okah was to be in court Monday.
