Toronto high-rise fire injures 14

TORONTO, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- A six-alarm fire in a 30-story public housing apartment building sent 14 people to hospitals in Toronto, Canadian media reports said Saturday.

The fire began in a 24th-floor unit of the downtown building Friday afternoon and spread to other units, prompting the evacuation of about 1,200 people, The Toronto Star reported.

Some 120 firefighters in 27 trucks responded to the blaze and battled spot fires for hours. Fire Chief William Stewart said 10 firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and three others were hospitalized, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Stewart said it wasn't immediately clear what started the fire that took more than six hours to bring under control.

Three of the 14 people hospitalized were children, the Star said.

Some 1,200 residents were evacuated to nearby community centers, and city officials were working Saturday to determine alternative housing options for those who were burned or smoked out of their apartments, reports said.
