PARIS, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Former French President Jacques Chirac has been charged with abuse of funds and will stand trial for embezzlement, his attorney said Tuesday.

Chirac, the first modern French leader to be charged with corruption, could face 10 years in prison and a fine of almost $200,000, Britain's Daily Telegraph reported.

The charges, the result of a three-year investigation, say Chirac paid 21 associates for non-existent jobs from 1992 to 1995 while he was mayor Paris.

"Jacques Chirac will go before his judges; he has said so and nothing will change the situation," Chirac's attorney, Jean Veil, told Europe 1 radio Monday.

Chirac has said he was never part of any "ghost jobs" system.
