BRUSSELS, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- A group of environmental lawyers has filed suit against the European Union accusing the EU of withholding information about biofuels.
Lead plaintiff ClientEarth said in the suit that the EU's executive body failed to release documents containing previously undisclosed details about the negative impact that widespread use of biofuels is having on the earth's climate, the EUobserver reported Tuesday.
The case filed in the EU's General Court in Luxembourg focuses on a controversial study published in April that the environmental lawyers said was manipulated to show that the EU's biofuel policy would reduce carbon emissions.
Lawyer Tim Grabiel said ClientEarth decided to take the case Monday after repeated calls to see e-mails relating to the study were ignored.
The group that conducted the study later claimed that its research was based on flawed assumptions inserted at the request of the commission's energy department, the report said.
